A Transatlantic Bath

How much fuel do you consume when you fly from Amsterdam to New York?

A very simple back of the envelope calculation shows that it’s about one bath tub filled with Kerosene:

  • The flight distance from New York to Amsterdam is 5863 kilometers
  • A Boeing 747 uses approximately 12 liters per kilometer
  • This plane carries about 500 people
  • A bath tub contains about 150 liters of water
  • 5863*12/500 = 140 liter
